Going along with the current trend in major championship golf, I'm going to bet that the winner of this year's British Open will be a non- American, who has yet to win a major championship. Most people would assume I'm going to pick the world's number one player Luke Donald or the #2 ranked player Lee Westwood, but I hate favorites. So I'm gonna give you 3 other names to keep an eye on for this weekend.
Sergio Garcia- Eventually this guy has to break through at a major, right? I guess not, but I do think his best chance is in a British Open. Most Spanish golfers are shot makers and if he can get his putter on track, he has as good a shot as any player in the field. Wouldn't it be something if he could win the Claret Jug in Seve Ballesteros' memory?
Paul Casey- Although he hasn't played his best golf this year, he's still a contender in this championship. His game is good enough to win a major as all aspects of his game are solid from driving to short game to iron play. He has been over shadowed by Donald, McIlroy, McDowell and even Westwood, but it wouldn't surprise anyone who follows golf if his name was near the top of the leaderboard come Sunday.
Ian Poulter- Good player, great dresser. Not sure why I picked him other than he's from England and he should be comfortable with links style golf. He hasn't made much noise at a British Open in the past but I'm hoping he makes me look good at this one, otherwise I'm gonna rip him Monday for being a gay dresser....that's how it works.
PS- If I had to pick a player to win this weekend that has already won a major, I'd pick Martin Kaymer. I think this kid will win 5 or 6 majors in his career, and the next great golf rivalry will be between him and McIlroy. Fact.
