In a city that prides itself on its sports culture, its absolutely unfathomable to me how Jim Hendry is still the GM of the Cubs. In any other major city, this guy would have been fired already. Hendry was promoted to GM on July 5, 2002 and he has worked for the Cubs since 1995.
He has negotiated a number of God awful contracts including Carlos Zambrano, Alfonzo Soriano, Kosuke Fukudome, Jason Marquis, Bob Howry, Jacque Jones and lets not forget the Milton Bradley debacle. I mean when is the last time, a Cubs fan said "that was a great signing".
His only great moves in the last ten years were the 2003 trade deadline move of acquiring Aramis Ramirez and Kenny Lofton from the Pirates and the 2004 offseason acquisition of Derek Lee for Hee Sop Choi, which basically fell in his lap because the Marlins were in sell off mode after their championship season. I also have to give him credit for obtaining Nomar Garciaparra, even though it didn't work out as well as Cubs fans had hoped.
As far as drafting goes, I understand it is his scouting director who does the research and analysis but its ultimately Hendry who is responsible for making the decisions. Other than Starlin Castro and Carlos Marmol and maybe Brett Jackson, the Cubs haven't done well drafting. Corey Patterson, Josh Vitters, Luiz Montanez, Bobby Hill, Felix Pie, and Tyler Colvin are/were all busts.
Its time to start fresh on the North Side and that begins with the firing of Hendry. We need new blood in the front office. We need a young 30 something hot shot like the Rays Andrew Friedman or the Red Sox Theo Epstein.
I'm backing AJ Preller, the Texas Rangers senior director of player personnel. He's young, talented and has the charisma to do well in this town. Tom Ricketts- its time to wake the fuck up and realize that this is America's team. Act accordingly.
